It's Been One Heck of a Day, and Still I Post...

Today has been another one of those really, really long days.

Shawn got pretty sick, throwing up and lethargic. No one else in the family is sick. He ate the same things Jason did today. There was no known reason for him to be that ill.

For Shawn, throwing up is a major warning sign that some serious things that have gone very wrong. We can't just dismiss his throwing up as simple stomach virus. Him being this sick warrants a trip to the ER.

So off we went.

We got taken back right away. They did vitals, weight, etc, and gave him some zofran. Wouldn't you know that then he decided to perk up and get some energy. He wasn't taking too kindly to these medical folks poking and prodding and LOOKING in his general direction, either. Nope, my boy wanted to go home. :-(

Sigh.

Anyway, he had some tests and was deemed okay. The attending (my least favorite doctor ever-seriously that says a lot when you've had as many doctors as we've had) wanted to admit him overnight for observation. Isaac and I declined. We got the whole "my recommendations have only been disregarded twice** in the last five years" speech but to us it was pointless to keep him there just to do what we can and do, do at home. (Let me just say that if there was any indication that something was even remotely off on his tests, we would have had no problem having him stay. Seriously. If anything was amiss outside of him throwing up (which he stopped), he'd be there right now. To have him stay just to watch him when there was no other red flags after the testing was not okay to us.)

We are now home. He is feeling a lot better. We are all tired, and it is time for bed.

Doesn't it look like we're all having fun?

**For the record, any guesses as to who the last family was that declined recommendation for admission just for observation?

Um, yep. That would be us.

I don't get doctors who don't take into account the competency, knowledge and experience of parents... I guess it's because most of them do that I'm just stumped.

Our younger son had his first cold a month or so ago and it hit him pretty hard. Respiratory rate in the 80s, sounding like a pig and just general congestion. We saw the pedi (it was a Friday), got chest x-rays and came up with the plan that we could monitor him at home and nebulize, and wouldn't go to the hospital in less he was getting worse.

Note, he did NOT have RSV. However, there is a lot of RSV around the hospital.

She told us to call and check in with her partner in the morning, Saturday. The partner tried to insist on us taking him in to admit to the hospital. Luckily I was able to remind her of the our doctor's statement and our doctor had left clear enough notes that I was able to convince her. But I think she may think I'm negligent still.

My kid who was born six days too late to get synagis this year, you want to send him to the respiratory floor of the children's hospital?
