Masterpiece

One of the skills the boys will be expected to master by 18 months is writing on paper. Jason will have nothing of it. All he wants to do is chew on the pencil.

Shawn, on the other hand, just finished his first masterpiece.

We call it "Scribbles and Drool." I'm so proud!

The Anatomy of a Crash

Hey, boys! What are you up to?

Oh, us? We're not doing anything. Why do you ask?

It sure looks like you're up to something. Shawn, why are you pulling on Jason's car?

Hey. That's right, Shawn! Why are your hands on my car?!

Forget that! I am out of here!
Just as soon as I can figure out how. Good thing I am a pro at going backwards!
.
.
.
Whoa!

Oops! What happened?

What are you doing down there, Shawn? I don't know why he's down there, mommy! I didn't do it!

But see? I'm alright! Next time, I want to borrow the helmet!

Grandma and the boys

Looky, she brought suckers!

Yummy! I heart suckers!

But not as much as me!

We had a very nice day, plus Mario and Stasi came over to watch the boys so Isaac and I could go out to eat by ourselves. We haven't done that in like forever. We had a really good time. Thank you, Mario and Stasi!

CSI - A Whodunit Mystery

We had an interesting end to our weekend. Let me set the scene:

Isaac was off at his mother's house visiting, which left me alone with the boys. I was hugging/snuggling on one of the boys while sitting on the floor. The other child was not happy about said snuggling. Apparently, the neglected child was getting quite angry about attention being spent someplace other than on him.

He started fussing.

He started to get a little more insistent about his feelings.

But I continued to snuggle his brother anyway. This made the neglected child very, very mad.

When I put the boy I was holding onto the floor and picked up the fussy boy, all seemed well. Mr. Fussy stopped his complaints and patted me on the back.

Then he bent over and bit me on the shoulder. Hard! And he wouldn't let go! I couldn't believe it.

At first, the bite mark was nothing more than a little raised area with a scrape in the center. But as more time elapsed, it started to look like this...

Today, the bruising is even more colorful.

Can you believe that? I am still shocked when I think about how quickly it happened.

Of course I know who the offender was, but I thought I would give you, dear reader, a chance to put you sleuthing skills to work. Let's see if you can figure out whodunit.

---

Suspect #1:
Shawn

aka "the Tongue"

This boy is all about the lick. He puts his tongue on anything he can, whenever he can. It is not uncommon to see him reaching for things, tongue outstretched, just so he can put it straight into his mouth.

He has 8 razor sharp teeth, capable of denting even the toughest book.

Don't let this innocent mug fool you, he is definitely more than capable of the attack.

Suspect #2:
Jason

aka "Uh Oh"

This boy is into everything. If he wants something, no one or nothing will get in his way. It isn't uncommon for Jason to just use his brother as a small speed bump if something he wants is on the other side.

He also has 8 razor sharp teeth. Plus, he's already got a prior offense, so we already know his teeth can be used as weapons!

So who did it you ask?

The Day

Thank you for all the positive vibes, everyone! We really appreciate it.

Well, the end of the day has finally arrived. It has been...exhausting.

The day started at the crack of dawn. First of all, I am not, by any means, a morning person. I never have been, and I KNOW I never will be. I even managed to get the boys trained to sleep in until 9 ish on most mornings! So, anyway, I pull my cranky self out of bed this morning while it was still dark outside. (OMG. I hadn't realized that it would be so dark at 5 in the morning. Good Lord, people, why does anyone get up at that time in the morning?!!? Jeez, and with the number of people on the road, it seems to be a common occurrence!) This was of course, after a fitful night of sleep, so I was even crankier than I would have been had I not been worried. We got ourselves up, dressed, fed, and out of the house in time to make it to the hospital by our 6 o'clock check-in time.

We finally got upstairs to wait for the doctor, who arrived somewhere around 7:50. Yes, we waited that entire time with a baby who was hungry and getting more suspicious that something big was up by the minute.

At 8:12, they came to take Shawn to the operating room. We were sent to a small waiting room just outside of the main wing and next to the elevator. The waiting area was big enough for 4 chairs.

Isaac and I were talking when the fire alarms first started. Then, I kid you not, a nurse came over to the waiting area we were in, told us that they were having a fire alarm, closed the doors to the hospital wing, and left us in the waiting room!

With no way out except for the elevator which was clearly labeled to not use during a fire!

While our baby was in the operating room!

Just as we were nearly in a panic (well, just as we were assessing how we could break the glass window behind us so we could get out, I'm not sure we were quite into panic mode yet), another nurse came and opened the door to the waiting area. Apparently they were testing the alarm system and there was no danger. That probably would have been nicer to know about three minutes earlier. It is a good thing we didn't actually follow through with the escape plan!

The alarms, though, continued to ring every three minutes the entire time we were there.

Anyway, a nurse finally let us know that Shawn's surgery was finished and I could go back to the recovery room.

When I got there, Shawn was finally getting to have a bottle of sugar water. I talked to him a little before he opened his eyes. He was so good, only crying when the nurse removed all the tape around his IV. They let us take him home about a half an hour after the surgery was over.

Now, he's swollen and has an inch long incision about two inches below the top of his diaper. His incision looks as good as having your groin cut and prodded could look. They said he'd be black and blue for a bit, and to ice the area as much as possible, but Shawn is having none of that.

We go back for his post-op follow up next week.

My only complaint about the experience, outside of the fire alarm incident, was that they stuck Shawn 9 times (that we could see, there may be more that we haven't found yet) before they put the IV in his neck. The poor little guy has a bruise at every spot an IV was attempted. It does frustrate me because I tried to warn them about his veins being shot from his NICU days, and told them where the best places to put the line in, but they didn't exactly listen. Shawn put up quite a fight, though, (even while he was supposed to be sedated) which somehow gives me a little bit of satisfaction. (take that you doctors who don't listen)

Humph. What do I know? I am just his mother.

I have to say again that I am very proud of Shawn. He really was exceptionally good today, never crying at all until him was in the recovery room. He is one tough little boy!

We also want to thank my mom for keeping Jason last night and all day today. Thanks, mom!

Update

Hi everyone. I know, I know. I've been an awful blogger lately. Sorry about that. I promise to post more often!

I just wanted to pop in and let you all know that we have yet another hurdle to jump on Thursday. At 5:30 am, Isaac and I will be taking Shawn down to CMH to have yet another surgery. (don't even ask what number this makes)

Shawn's surgery will be to repair a hydrocele that developed after his hernia surgery in January 08. Since that surgery, he's been noticeably swollen in his groin area, but we were under the impression that the solution would be a quick extraction of the extra fluid buildup via needle once he turned one. (doesn't that sound pleasant?)

Unfortunately, when I took him to the urologist in December to have the procedure done, the doctor said that removing the fluid via the needle would not work and the only solution was surgery. Bleh.

Anyway, Shawn is scheduled first thing on Thursday. If all goes well, we should be able to bring him home sometime mid afternoon.

Thanks to my mom for once again stepping in to help. She's volunteered (um, you did volunteer right mom?) to keep Jason Wednesday night and Thursday while we're at the hospital.

I'll update sometime that night with an update on how he's doing.

Until then, if you get a chance, could you please send all your positive thoughts Shawn's way. He's one tough little guy, and I'm sure he'll be okay, but still. It never hurts to have good thoughts!

With love,
Team Lopez

P.S. If you haven't yet, check the post below this. It was Jason's Homecoming Day yesterday!

On This Day In History...

...one year ago, our little team was finally complete. That's right, Jason came home from the hospital!

And you know what? There hasn't been a quiet time since! :-)

Jason, you are the go-getter, the boy always on the move. Your quick laughter and funny disposition (usually) always brightens my day. I am so happy that you are our son!

Happy Homecoming Day, Jason!
