8 Months Old!

8 months old (35 weeks old)

Weight:  20 pounds, 4 ounces. (54th percentile)

Length:  Big boy is 31 3/4 inches long. (97th percentile)

Wearing: size 3 Huggies diapers and 12 month clothes.

Feedings: Jack 5-7 ounces of formula a feeding 5 times a day for a total of approximately 28-32ish ounces a day. He's now eating solids three times a day.

Favorites: Jack has discovered the television. Oh, how he loves the television. The boy will practically break his neck to watch tv. Sigh. (Sophie and his other toys are still loved, too.)

Least Favorites: Jack still doesn't like to be left alone.

Issues: Someone make the screaming stop! Lol. He has a voice, and he is NOT afraid to use it. (He isn't screaming because he is upset or not happy about things. It is purely a matter of him vocalizing...loudly.)

Personality: Jack is still fairly easy going. He's had a few more grumpy days this month with him being sick/teething, but he is truly a pretty good baby.

Areas to work on: Sitting has been conquered! Now we're on to the crawling...well, the issue is that we are not on to the crawling I guess. :) He is quite good at turning himself around on his belly, but has no interest in trying to get up on all fours yet.

New Things: Let's see: he is clapping his hands; he totally understands the idea of object permanence; he loves to pat me while I am patting him; he has 6 teeth and one on the way; he is working on mastering getting out of a sitting position without falling; and he is starting to really "talk" with actual "words".

Randomness: Jack will not leave my hair alone. Ugh. He is constantly pulling on it (and pulling it out) if I have it down. My necklace is also a favorite thing to attack.

---

Some things Jack is expected to do: (milestones for eight months)

Mastered Skills (most kids can do)

  • Says "mama" or "dada" to parents (isn't specific) - Yes, he seems to be specific with mama and says it to me and not Isaac
  • Passes objects from hand to hand - yes
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)

  • Stands while holding onto something - Yes
  • Crawls - Nope
  • Points at objects - No. He reaches for things, but I wouldn't say that he is pointing at things.
  • Searches for hidden objects - Yes
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)

  • Pulls self to standing, cruises - No
  • Picks things up with thumb-finger pincer grasp - Emerging, but he isn't really getting the oportunity to practice with smaller things (we need to start him on his puffs!)
  • Indicates wants with gestures - Yes, he holds his arms up to be picked up, he'll gesture toward toys, shakes his head no

Trimming the Tree

Tonight we started trimming the tree. The boys could hardly wait!

Helping mommy untangle the lights

Boy, these are really tangled!

Let me hold them, mommy!

They keep getting all tangled up!

Time for the ornaments...Shawn wasn't impressed at this point.
He'd had enough with detangling lights.

Jason, on the other hand, was all over it.
He's making the motorcycle tow the ornament to the tree.

The motorcycle wasn't exactly cooperating at first.

Success!

Hanging some ornaments on the tree.

On the step stool so we can reach the middle of the tree
instead of just the bottom. :)

The second of the two ornamental casualties.

A close up of Jay's handy work
We didn't really finish the tree tonight. I figure I'll bring out a few ornaments a night for a few nights so the boys can have some fun. I'll be sure to post a picture when it's all finished.

Monday Memories

Shawn:

Shawn had developed a new love of dancing. Any time he hears music, he starts to dance. Of course that means we all must dance, too. (He is thoroughly disappointed in Jason's refusal to participate in the dance party, though.)

He's also perfecting his first knock, knock joke...are you ready?

(Shawn) Knock, knock.
(me) Who's there?
(Shawn) Banana.
(me) Banana who?
(Shawn) Knock, knock.

(me) Who's there?
(Shawn) Banana.
(me) Banana who?
(Shawn) Knock, knock.
(me) Who's there?
(Shawn) Orange.
(me) Orange who?
(Shawn) Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

(Shawn) "Waaah, waaah, waaaaaaah!"

---

Jason:

(to daddy) "Put me down, I want to tell mommy something!"
(hurried over to me) "Mommy, daddy forgot the pizza on top of the car! And it would have made a mess all over the road..." He waited a second before he added, "Waaah, waaah, waaaaaaah!"

Jason had a sad little face that he thought no one was noticing. "Daddy, daddy, daddy. Say, 'Jason what's the matter?'" He went back to making a sad little face.
(Isaac) What Jay?
"Daddy, say, 'Jason what's the matter?'" Cue another sad face.
(Isaac) Oh! Jason, what's the matter?
"My tummy hurts."
(Isaac) Well, what do you want me to do?
"I want more chocolate donut. That will make it feel better!"

---

Jack:

Within the last week, Jack has started to earnestly clap when he's happy. He claps when he's sad. He claps when he's bored. He claps when he's having fun. You get the picture. He loves himself a good clap.

I love the fact that Jack has started patting me (on the arm, the back, or wherever he can reach) when I pat him. He thinks it's incredibly funny to do, too, and always laughs when I ask him what he's doing.

Back story: Don't worry, these are clean, never been worn undies. lol. I had done laundry, and these were sitting on the arm of the couch. Jack grabbed them and preceded to play with them for the rest of the night. That's perfectly normal, right?

Flashback Friday - We've Come a Long Way, Baby!

This is the last Friday of November, so Prematurity Awareness Month will soon be coming to a close. I hope that you learned a few facts about prematurity and maybe even visited the March of Dimes website for more information.

---

This last Flashback Friday post was first published on December 14, 2007. They were 48 days old.

We've Come a Long Way, Baby!

The appearances of the babies are changing daily, and it goes beyond the regular growth that babies make. I thought it would be fun to tell you about some of the things that have "appeared" over the last seven weeks. Here are a few:

1) Thankfully, the boys got nipples, but you already knew that. You'll be happy to know that their nipples continue to get bigger and we actually have a raised center now!

2) Eyelashes - The boys were born without eyelashes. For some reason, this was never a concern for me. Maybe I never really noticed it before. Maybe I just instantly thought of them having eyelash transplants (you know, like some kind of Hair for Men type thing) and dismissed it. I don't know. But, now that their eyelashes are growing in, it is very noticeable! It seems like their eyelashes are getting longer every day!

3) Tears - The boys still don't cry with tears. They never have. Their tear ducts are not producing tears yet, so when they cry, they just do the face scrunching up thing and make a little noise. Their tears won't start to form for quite a few more weeks.

4) Crying - Now that they are getting bigger, their voices now sound more like a newborn baby's. Before, they would never really make noise. When they would make noise, Isaac said it sounded like a baby goat's noise. They still don't cry very often and are easily soothed. Often all it takes to calm them is a little sugar water.

5) Sucking - Now this is debatable on whether this has appeared yet, especially with the boys having to go back and relearn this skill. They did have a visit from an "oral therapist" to see how they are progressing in the sucking category on Tuesday. (I have no idea what an oral therapy session is like because I wasn't there, but I bet it was interesting. lol) The conclusion is that they need to start practicing nippling again. Duh. I could have figured that one out,

That is all I can think of off of the top of my head. I'll add to this list as I think of things.

Still no pictures yet, but I am working on Jason's sucking premiere. Too cute! I will try to have it up by the end of today... (It's here, if you want to see it.)
