Update on Baby Lo

I just had another perinatalogist appointment on Monday. Baby Lo was looking good. He's measuring at 2 pounds 2 ounces, which is still following his big growth curve. (Here is a cool growth average chart. For reference, I am 25 weeks and 2 days and the boys were 2 lbs 15 ounces at 28 weeks 3 days.) Amniotic fluid looks great. Baby's right kidney is still a bit enlarged, but not alarmingly so. I am told that boys just sometimes do this kind of thing.

Holla!

I didn't get any great shots of Baby Lo (still no name, I'm not holding out on you) this appointment. I did however get an awesome shot of him at the last appointment. Without further ado, meet little Baby Lo...

Isn't he just awesome! :-) I am not sure which of the boys he looks like more.

Shawn:

or Jason (trying to make off with Shawn's nose):

Things are getting exciting now. :-)

Merry Christmas!

We caught Santa in the act!

Santa left lots of goodies for our little boys. We can't wait for them to see everything. I don't know who is more excited about tomorrow (well, today) morning--them or us!

Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Our Visit With Santa

I am pleased to announce that this year's Santa's visit went wonderfully! (We actually went on the 11th.) There were no tears at all, either.

Well, I guess I need to be honest...there were tears, but none had to do with good old St. Nick. Shawn was assaulted by an overly friendly four year old who kept shoving his stuffed frog in Shawn's face. Let's just say that Shawn was less than pleased about it.

They were rock stars during the wait. When they got on his lap, they could hardly look away...

Hey there! How are you, big guy? We've heard a lot about you!

As you can see, Jason is pleased as punch that he is sitting on Santa's lap. Shawn was equally as pleased, but he spent most of his time trying to point out mommy to Santa. In the above picture, he is trying to get my attention so I could come meet Santa, too. He liked him that much, he wanted to share him with me! Aww...

The hardest thing about these boys, though, is getting them both to look at the camera at the same time. Sigh. The photographer, Isaac, and I were jumping around, yelling like crazy trying to get their attention. One would look, but the other wouldn't. You get the idea. Lol.

But we finally got them both looking at the camera...

Cheese!

Now the boys like to look at the picture and tell me all about Santa. It is too cute.

This year was a much better shot than we got last year...

Heh, heh.
The funny part about this shot is that Shawn swears up and down that the crying boy is Jason! He does not take credit for that moment at all.

Yes, the other years' shots were good, but it is hard to top the first time they saw Santa...

I mean look at those itty, bitty faces! :-) How can you top those looks?

Lastly, I am posting the boy's first Christmas pictures. Here they are in all of their nearly 4 pound glory. They were so tiny, these newborn socks swim on their feet.

(Shawn on the right, Jason on the left)

This last shot is one of my all time favorites of the boys. It was the first time I actually got to hold them both at the same time, too. :-)

I know! This one deserves loads more awwws than the others combined!

Man, these guys are cute!

From our family to yours,

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Merry Christmas!

Flashback Friday - December 10, 2008

13 months old actual, 10.5 months adjusted...

Shawn jumping in his jumper, smiling like usual.

Jason is blowing raspberries and jumping, too.

Such little cutie pies, if I do say so myself. :-)

A Day of Awareness

Three years ago, my little guys were in the NICU due to their very early arrival at 28 weeks and 3 days.

Three years ago, at this point in their lives we had only held the boys two times--two times even though they were nearly a month old.

Three years ago, our boys had just barely made it to the 3 pound mark.

Three years ago, Jason had just come of the ventilator, without which he would not have survived.

Three years ago, it was common to watch our boys forget to breathe.

Three years ago, we spent countless hours staring at beeping monitors while we anxiously waited for our nurses to come help.

Three years ago today, our hearts tore just a little bit more each day we had to leave our little warriors at the hospital instead of taking them home with us.

Three years ago, Isaac and I were living in a world that fluctuated back and forth between excitement over our two new little miracles and complete and utter fear.

I tell you this because yesterday, November 17th, was Prematurity Awareness Day. November is Prematurity Awareness Month. And as you all know, prematurity is a cause that we hold close to our hearts.

Currently, one out of every 8 babies is born too early, and every year, more than half a million babies are born prematurely in the United States. That is far too many babies born premature!

We must find a way to fight against prematurity. We need to do fighting--because no baby should ever have to on his or her own. Sadly, some babies are not strong enough to fight, which is why premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death worldwide. Even babies born just a few weeks too soon can face serious health challenges and are at risk of lifelong disabilities.

In our case, we were lucky. Even though my water broke at 26 weeks, we managed to hold off labor for another 17 precious days. Had they been born at 26 weeks, there is a very real possibility that neither of our boys would have survived.

We owe the boys' lives to the work of the March of Dimes. Please remember to support the March of Dimes. For Shawn and Jason. For all the children born too soon.

Thank you.

Saturday, November 6, 2010

I had a perinatologist appointment on Friday with Dr. Doom. For those of you who don't know who Dr. Doom is, he's the man that continued to give me bad news after bad news while I was pregnant with the boys. Anyway, the appointment went well.
  • First trimester screening results: Trisomy 21 - risk of 1 in 1900. Trisomy 18 - risk of 1 in 4100. Results = screen negative. That means that the baby has a very low risk of Down's Syndrome! Yay.
  • The baby looked great! He/she is growing ahead of his/her gestational age by up to a week and a half in most areas. His/her length measured in as 20 weeks! (I am only 18 weeks pregnant today.) What can I say? We make 'em big.
  • The baby's heart, brain, and other organs looked good.
  • The baby was sucking a thumb when we first started the ultrasound. (Awww...) After a bit, the baby put both arms on its little chest and let the ultrasound tech do her thing. :-) It was too cute!

The doctor said that everything looked good with the baby! Those are such great words to hear!

Oh! We also learned the gender of the baby-to-be. :-) Rather than coming right out and telling you, we thought we'd take a poll and see what you all think baby #3 is going to be.

So which one? Boy? or Girl?

Poll Results as of 7:00pm:

What is the gender of Baby-to-be?

Boy (33) 46%

Girl (39) 54%

Total Votes: 72

I'll be back Monday night to spill the beans on what we're having! Vote and check back then!

---

I just wanted to add that this little blog turned 3 yesterday! I have posted 387 posts over the years. Pretty cool, huh? Someday soon I need to covert this thing into a baby book...

Halloween 2010

This year's Halloween went better than we could have ever expected! I am so happy to be able to say that...

...because I've got to tell you things didn't start off all that great. The boys were NOT into wearing their costumes.

In fact, when we finally got them into said costumes, both of the boys looked like this:

It's a bird...it's a plane...No, it's SuperShawn!

Shawn is not enjoying his cape. "Take it off, mommy!"

By the time I snapped this shot of Jason, the tears had stopped. Just know it wasn't pretty with him just a few minutes before this.

It's Captain America himself -- with all of his muscles!
In case you can't tell, he's also trying to take off his costume.

The tears stopped when we told them we were going to go to the store. As you can see, Jason ans Shawn are up for the adventure!

All ready to hit the mall...and the candy! Let's roll!

The boys had a lot of fun, too! The both said, "Trick or Treat" and "Thank you," as we went from store to store.

"Wow! They're giving us candy!??! Awesome!"

"Trick or Treat!"

All done trick or treating. We had a great time!

Once again, the boys were their rock star selves. :-)
After the mall, we headed off to grandma's house so the boys could visit in their costumes.

Here is Shawn showing off his costume to grandma...

Jason wanted to show off his costume to grandma, too!

Shawn didn't want any of his candy last night. Jason, on the other hand, was in his own little heaven!

"Mmmm...a sucker..."

We finished the night with a surprise visit from family (yay!) and a nice little family picture...

I can't tell you how impossible it is to get everyone to look at the camera at the same time. My mom managed to make it happen with the first shot. It is almost like the Halloween miracle! :-)
Our Halloween was a raging success. We hope you all had a fun-filled Halloween, too!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Jason!

Don't forget to read the posts about the boys below!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Shawn!

Don't forget to read the posts about the boys below!

Shawn at 3 Years Old!!!

Shawn: (33 Months Adjusted*)

Weight: My scale says 28 pounds and 0 ounces (13th percentile for actual age/19th percentile for adjusted age). He is still wearing size 24 month pants (he has his daddy's short legs) and size 2T shirts. He also wears a size 3T pajamas.

Length: 36.25 inches! That is the 14th percentile for a 3 year old (29th percentile for adjusted age).

Feedings: Shawn will try anything once, especially if mommy or daddy happens to be eating it first. He isn't a huge meat eater, but has come to finally eat hot dogs and chicken nuggets on occasion. He LOVES chocolate and sweets. He truly has my sweet tooth, that's for sure. :-) If I had to say what his favorite meal is, I'd say the Cheesy Potato Burrito from Taco Bell.

Favorites: The last time I posted one of these, Shawn loved to snuggle. Well, nothing has changed. He loves to snuggle on people or with his blanket and pacifier (don't judge) if no one is available. He is a big fan of music as well. We always have a radio playing in the playroom, just for him. His favorite song is "Itsy Bitsy Spider." His favorite toys right now are some magnetic letters (he is a fan of the "Q", "C", and "8") and coloring with his crayons. He also loves pots and pans and often will pretend to make things for us to eat. His favorite television show is "Yo Gabba Gabba," but he would prefer for daddy to show him YouTube videos on the computer to watching the actual television.

Least Favorites: Two things Shawn does not enjoy are: 1) being told "No!"--with the aftermath often leading to lots of time on the naughty chair--and 2) getting bath soap on him. There is something about the bubbles that sort of freak him out. He is fine in the bath before and after the actual soaping time.

Personality: Shawn is a very determined little guy. He definitely wants things his way. Sometimes, you can talk him out of what he wants, but often you can't. He has been known to try to bite if he can't have his way! (I know! My child? Bite? Lol.) He can also be very friendly and lovable. When we go out, he is the one to talk to all the strangers we see. He likes to know where everyone is, but he is content to quietly play in the playroom on his own. Shawn has started to mimic his brother's behavior. Sometimes this is good. Many times, it is not!

Strengths: Shawn is a hard worker. His determination to do whatever is at hand allows him to focus on things until he gets them. He is getting to be quite the expert on the computer. He knows the exact buttons to push to get the computer to pause, play, and stop. He also has incredible hearing (like freakishly so!). He is very social and friendly. Lastly, he is willing to try most foods.

Areas to Work On: While Shawn continues to make gains and seems to be mostly caught up to his actual age cognitively, he still has work to do in his gross motor skills. Shawn is still not walking independently. He crawls, pulls up to stand, and cruises. He loves to walk holding daddy's or mommy's hands. It may take him a bit longer, but I believe with all of my heart that he will eventually walk. It'll take him a little longer than most.

While these milestones don't seem like much, they are incredible when you take Shawn's rocky start into consideration. For those of you who don't know (and I admit that I haven't said much here on their blog about this), Shawn has had 13 surgeries in his short little life. At about the time he was 7 months old, after one of his surgeries Shawn stopped using his right arm/hand. He kept his right hand fisted and hardly used it. Frankly, it was like his arm/hand were not even there. You can imagine how something like that will affect the entire balance system of your body.

Now, I am happy to say that while he is still not as coordinated in his right arm as he is in his left, he is using his arm/hand to hold things and reach among other things. Not only that, he continues to improve each and every day. I believe it is Shawn's strong will and incredible determination that is allowing him to make such wonderful gains. :-)

New Things: Shawn has an obsession with all things computer. Oh boy does he love the computer!

Randomness: One of the cutest things Shawn is doing at the moment is that he reminds me every morning to put on my seat belt before we leave for grandma's. He is like clockwork. It makes me smile each morning. Another thing that Shawn does is that he insists that all doors must be closed. In fact, one of the quickest ways to get him out of bed in the morning is to leave the bathroom door open. He has sonar hearing for the door knob and comes flying from his room so he can close the door. Afterward, he reminds us to thank him even!

**Don't forget to read all about Jason here!

---

**Yes, I am still adjusting the boys' age. The March of Dimes states that most children catch up developmentally by three years of age. The March of Dimes also states that parents can stop adjusting a child's age when it feels most comfortable to them. My boys had a rougher start than many preemies, so I believe they deserve some extra catch up time. To me, it doesn't feel right to stop adjusting yet. I'll certainly stop before they reach adulthood! Just bear with me! :-)

Jason at 3 Years Old!!!

(For some reason, blogger won't let me upload pictures. I'll put them in soon!)

Jason: (33 Months Adjusted*)

Weight: My scale says 33 pounds and 10 ounces (71st percentile for actual age/78th percentile for adjusted age). He is wearing size 2T pants and size 3T shirts. He also wears a size 4T pajamas.

Length: 38 inches! That is the 54th percentile for a 3 year old (72nd percentile for adjusted age).

Feedings: Jason is a pretty picky eater. In fact, it is hard to get him to try new things. He has a set of standard foods that he only wants to eat. Introducing new foods into that pre-established menu in his head is hit and miss. Who am I kidding? It is miss. He loves fruits, but isn't a fan of veggies. He is not much of a sweet eater. He loves cheese crackers, banana bread, and fruit snacks. His favorite meal has to be pizza.

Favorites: Jason is a fan of the television. Oh boy, is he a fan of the television. He loves just about all of the Nick Jr. shows, especially Umi Zoomi and Wow, Wow Wubbzy. His loves his little kitty and sleeps with it every night. He is totally into cars and trains now, too. He likes to make "tracks" for his trains to follow and "tunnels" for his cars to drive under. Another thing that Jason loves is stickers. He loves putting his stickers all over his cars and toys.

Least Favorites: Jason does not like loud noises at all, especially high pitched buzzers or bells. Personally, I think they remind him a bit of the NICU noises, but I don't know that for sure. Jason is also hesitant around new experiences and people. It takes him a long time to warm up to things. He's fine, though, once he's had the chance. Jason also does not like to share his toys with his brother. I think the biggest least favorite, though, is getting his hair cut. Jason can't stand to get his hair cut. Actually, Jason doesn't even like for us to TALK about cutting his hair! (Vanity starts so early with kids nowadays!)

Personality: Jason is the observer of the two. He likes to sit back and watch what is going on around him before he will join. Like I said before, he is hesitant with new things. Jason is also a strong willed little guy, which can make some moments frustrating because he is all hot or all cold. There is no middle ground with him! He does have a soft side to him, though. He is good about comforting his brother when Shawn is upset. Plus, he does like to give hugs and kisses.

Strengths: Jason can talk your ear off. I have to say the boy is very strong in his verbal abilities. (Wonder where that came from?) He has an active imagination and can be very creative in what he says and does. He has a great attention for details. If something is new or different, Jason knows immediately. He knows all of his colors, shapes, letters, and numbers up to 14 (sometimes higher).

Areas to Work On: Jason is also caught up to his actual age cognitively, but he also has work to do with his gross motor skills. Jason is still not walking independently, either. He crawls, pulls up to stand, and cruises without any problems. He can walk short distances holding only one hand. BUT, (and this is a big but) Jason lacks confidence in himself, which I believe is preventing him from really taking off with his walking. You know how Dumbo needed the feather to help him fly? Well, I need to figure out what "feather" Jason needs because he is capable but just won't take off. Sigh. We'll get him to walking soon I think--when he has decided he can. (Remember how I said he was strong willed? Well, here is yet another example!)

New Things: Jason has started to create patterns (both by colors and shapes!) with his toys and blocks. He also likes to sort his toys. It is really neat to watch him do it, because he is pretty particular at placing things just so.

Randomness: Jason has a new obsession with gas stations. I have no idea why, but they are completely fascinating to him. He asks me every single day if we can stop at the gas station on the way home! Another thing that Jason has been doing a lot of is pretending he is different animals/things. It is too funny because he also makes sure to tell the rest of us what animal/thing we are for the day, too. When he is in a good mood, he'll make us mommy or daddy whatever he is (mommy and daddy puma when he is the baby puma for example). On those days he isn't in the best of moods, he assigns us to be the animals/things he doesn't like! (One day I was a dump truck. Now what message was he sending to me with that one?)

Pregnancy Update - 16 weeks

How far along: 16 weeks today

Total weight gain: 4 pounds. I think I am starting to show now.

Maternity clothes: I have moved up a pants size, but I am not is maternity clothes just yet. I have ordered some, though, because I know my time in regular pants is limited...

Stretch marks: nope

Sleep: I wish there was more time for sleep. Ah, how I love it. I started to sleep with an extra pillow in between my legs. I can't quite get comfortable and end up tossing and turning all night. Let's not forget my nightly trek to the bathroom at about 4 am! Oh, and I am hot, which is totally not the norm for me.

Best moment this week: There were two: 1) I felt the baby move several times this week! It is surreal. I think he/she has turned, though, because I am not feeling the movements as often. 2) The boys are finally open to the idea of having a baby around the house! Until now, they kept telling me they didn't want a baby. Lol.

Belly button in or out?: in

Cravings: lumpia and pancit, pickles, chocolate, instant breakfast, french fries, and more chocolate

Dr. appointments?: I had an OB appointment on Thursday. The baby's heart beat was a steady 150 beats per minute. Things look good so far. :-) The next appointment (with the high risk doctor) is November 5.

What I am looking forward to: Making it passed that first milestone--24 weeks. That is considered viability for a pregnancy. Of course I'd like to make it to 37 weeks or beyond, but I am setting mini-goals along the way.

Kidbits: Our Life in a Series of Face Book Updates... Part 4

"Got back from the zoo a little bit ago. No one wanted to leave. Jason actually cried when he saw we pulled into the driveway! Lol."

August 8

"Jason had a little something extra with his dinner tonight. For some reason, he ate the nose piece from his glasses. Don't ask me how/what he did. I am still scratching my head. Lucky for him that he didn't choke again!"

August 10

"We opened up Mommy's Hair Salon o' Terror again yesterday and gave the boys hair cuts. Their hair looks great, but jeez you would think we were inflicting great bodily harm while we were doing the cutting!"

August 15

"Today's mother of the year moment: stabbed poor Shawn under his chin with my pinkie nail. Made him cry and bleed. I feel bad. :-( Hoping he forgets by morning. He tends to remember these kinds of things."

August 16

"Much of the day was spent hiding in the linen closet. Yes, all of us. Well, all of us except Isaac. :-) They had a blast! Too funny."

August 17

"Last week I could hardly keep my eyes open at the end of the day. Jason was so tired of me falling asleep on the couch that he took to just pulling me off of it whenever I sat down. When that wouldn't work, he'd settle for hiding my blanket. Shawn would wait for me to pass out and then smack me in the face to wake me up.This week of school is much better than last (so far at least!). I have only napped once!"

August 31

"The comment of the week came from Jason. He was sitting on his naughty chair for being an utter pill (gotta love it when they are cranky with sickness). While there he yelled out, "I QUIT this place!" Sigh. I think I am in trouble."

September 9

"It doesn't matter where Shawn is. If he thinks I have chocolate, he comes running! He is his mother's son, that's for sure. :-)"

September 10

"Yesterday Shawn was building a tower with his blocks. He wasn't really paying attention to what he was doing, so the blocks would often fall as soon as he stacked them. When we told him to "keep an eye on your blocks," he stopped what he was doing, picked up a block, and immediately held it up to his glasses! I nearly lost it laughing. I sometimes forget that they are so literal at this age!"

September 24

"Ordered yet another set of lenses for Shawn...if they ask me one more time if I own a dog, I think I am going to scream. No! I don't own a dog. Just a kid who bites his glasses when he gets mad at me. Sigh."

October 8

"Jason at dinner: "I'm parched! Can I have some water?"I swear I scratch my head at least 50 times a day wondering where they get this stuff!"

October 14

"Shawn after dinner: He looked at me and immediately scrunched his eyes tightly closed. "Moooooommmmmyyyy!" he said. "It's getting dark in here..."

Well open your eyes, baby.

"Oh! There you are! I was scared of the dark!" Such a comedian!"

October 14

"Went to get the boys & found that Shawn was missing a lens in his glasses. Couldn't find it anywhere. No problem. The lenses I had ordered last week were in. We got to the store only to find the lenses were for women's frames. WTF? Have to reorder AGAIN. Finally found the lens we lost in one of my mom's CUPBOARDS under the shelf liner. Shawn tried HARD to hide it!"

Parenthood

I was somewhat shocked to flip the calendar in the kitchen this month. It is October. Do you know what that means?!

How did that happen?

More importantly, how can it be that my tiny little 2 pound miracles...

(Shawn on the day he was born.)

(Jason on the day he was born.)

...are just about to turn three years old?

THREE!!!!

Not one.

Not two.

But THREE!

My goodness the time sure flies by quickly.

These boys, and all of their lovable, playful, stubborn, opinionated, polite, and comical moments, are all that we could have imagined and so much more.

They never fail to amaze us with their strength and determination.

Our pride in them increases every single day. We are doing it. We are raising awesome little men.

What can be better than that?

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

So that got us thinking.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.

And that got us to hoping.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.

In April 2011, we get the chance to see if maybe we could be this fortunate again.

We'd like to formally introduce you to the newest member of Team Lopez...

Lilypie Pregnancy tickers

While we won't be completely relaxed until Baby Lopez is safely in our arms (which will lead to a whole new set of worries for sure!), we finally feel comfortable sharing our exciting news!

For us, we know that 3 is our magic number.

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Three years ago today, Jason's water broke. We headed to the hospital, where I had a course of steroids to hopefully mature the babies' lungs when they come early. I was 26 weeks pregnant.

In 17 days, the boys will turn three. The countdown to the boys' birth is on.

The Fair

We had a great time at the county fair this year. The boys had a lot of fun watching all of the people, and happily, this year they loved the animals!

Well, okay. They mostly loved the animals.

Fine. They liked the animals.

Sigh. They tolerated the animals.

But, there were much fewer tears, so I'm going to call the experience a success!

Here's daddy with Shawn. See? We look pretty happy here!

What is that? A smile? Yes, it is a smile! I think Shawny enjoyed petting this dear.

He likes ears...

Jason liked the animal experience a lot better than Shawn. Here he is talking to a little goat.

The goat wanted to give him a kiss! (Jason wasn't so fond of that, though.)

Now the goat has decided to come after me. He was an aggressive little guy.

Group shot!

This deer followed Isaac around and kept grabbing at his butt. It was too funny.

Here we are looking at the kaleidoscopes. The boys loved these. They were fascinated with all of the beautiful colors. Shawn in particular thought they were pretty cool.

Jason also like the kaleidoscopes. He said they reminded him of the beautiful lights in the sky. (fireworks--He asks several times a week when he can see the beautiful lights in the sky again.)

Before we left, the boys got the chance to eat some yummy french fries and have some cotton candy.

All in all, we had a great day!
