Cute Big Boy Saturday

Today we got a praying mantis egg case. In somewhere between 4-10 weeks, we will be the happy host family for 75-200 baby mantises.

How cool is that?!

Jason was immediately drawn to our new adventure. He grabbed the care pamphlet from my hand and raced off to go read the info.

He was quite pleased that he was the expert and knew so much more than the rest of us. :)

Our little guys are now nestled safely in their new home.

Now the waiting for their hatching begins!

Friday Five

This coming week will be Teacher Appreciation Week at the boys' school. I had already figured I'd be heading to Starbucks to get some gift cards for their teachers, and then they came home with this flyer:

The PTA at the boys' school are asking the kids to bring the teachers/staff an "Italian Dinner in a Bag." Students are supposed to bring an item on the list based on the letter of their last name. For us, that means the boys are supposed to bring pizza toppings.

Now call me a party pooper, but I don't know if I can bring myself to go buy perishable items to send to school as an "appreciation" gift. My mind goes to all kinds of crazy scenarios most of which don't end up with a happy ending for the teachers! lol

~~~
Jack was climbing trees...or, um, stumps...and got stuck. LOL!
Also, this tree may never leave our yard at this rate.
~~~

The boys' principal said over the school intercom today that students could nominate someone at school for the "employee of the month." Jay's been thinking about it and decided that he wanted to submit the name of a noon supervisor because "she is always so nice to me, and I like her a lot." He later told me that this person treats him (and Shawn) like "VIPs." Melt my heart!

I asked Shawn who he would nominate. He decided that he would nominate his current teacher. I asked him why. "Because I love her." That right there says it all. :)

~~~
Shawn is amazing people at school with his mad multiplication skillz. Go, Shawn!
~~~

Jason won a necklace for his work in an egg and spoon race at school. He is VERY proud. Go, Jay!

#Floored

So I made flash cards of the first 100 sight words for the boys when they were in kinder. Jack just found the cards and brought them to me. Then he blew my mind when he read them...

While he didn't get all the words correct, I'd say he got 85-90% of them. He breezed through the color words, and only really tripped over words like "there" and "said."

Fingers crossed that he'll be a reader, too!

Conversations With 5 Year Olds

I came home early to get ready for the big boys' eye appointment. Isaac was rinsing his hands at the kitchen sink. Jack was sitting at the table, eating, when I walked in...

Me: "What are you doing, Jack?"

Him: "I'm eating lunch..."

Him (in a somewhat disgusted tone): "Like a DOG."

Me: "Ok then. Have fun."

Lol!

Story Time

"The frog chase

Once upon a time a dog chased a frog. The frog had short legs. The dog jumped on the cake. He hurt his leg. They went to the hospital. They are all better. They raced and they go to Engleand. They go home to America. They go eat. They go to bed. They wake up. They drove to Mc. Donald's. They went home and ate. The end."

Future's So Bright They Gotta Wear Shades

The boys had an eye appointment today. Even though they had to have the dreaded drops today, they rocked the appointment. So proud!

Both boys' eyes are doing well. Jason's right eye is slightly weaker than his left. Shawn's right eye is slightly stronger than his left. Looking at their info, it looks like there is the exact same difference between the strength of their eyes. Cracks me up how they manage to do things like that all the time.

Both got new scripts because their eyesight is actually getting stronger. We may be able to ditch the glasses altogether for both of them at some point in the not too distant future. Yay!

Jay's in the exam room, and Shawn's sporting some dark glasses to protect his dilated eyes. :)

Tea Time

Shawn wanted to have a tea party. Jack was happy to join in...

Friday Five

On Monday, Isaac and I took Jack out to lunch and a quick trip to the store. It was clear that Jack really loved having the undivided attention of both of his parents. He latched on to both of our hands as we walked along and soaked it all in. It was cute.

Although it does point out that in this regard, having to share parents with your siblings, it kind of stinks being the youngest. Poor guy.

~~~
I tried to post this video last Friday, but apparently it didn't go through. I'm trying again, because I think he looks so cute here.
Here's a quick video of Shawn scoping out the ladies at school...
He's such a flirt!
~~~

Speaking of Shawn, here is a paragraph he wrote about Muhammad Ali (transcribed just how he wrote it):

"Muhammed Ali was born January 17, 1943. He was born Caassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. Growing up they called him "GG" because as a baby he said "gee, gee, gee, gee." When Ali was young, someone stole his bike and he was mad, which led him to boxing."

I just love seeing his growth in his writing!

~~~
It seems that videos aren't loading very well on the blog. I posted this the other day with Shawn and Jason's jokes, but it wasn't there later. (I added it tonight.)
Here's Jack telling his new joke...
~~~

Jason has decided it is time for us all to play Minecraft with him. "I want to see if I can sneak up behind you and whack you with my diamond sword, mom!"

Well, if that isn't motivation to play the game, I don't know what is! lol

Tiny Dancer

We took Jack to the store this week. He totally rocked out to the techno music that was playing in the background. LOL!

Little Comedians

Jack's started telling a new joke this weekend. The big boys had some jokes to tell, too!

Cute Big Boy Saturday

Showing off his hard work...

Then he promptly "crashed" it into the floor and broke it into a million pieces. Such is the life of a boy, I guess.

Friday Five

Today, the boys came home and proudly declared that there had been an AR assembly. Their class won the prize for the most AR points out of the entire school. "We had the most out of all 20 classes, mom!" Jason told us. He thinks this is especially cool. ;)

Shawn also won his first AR prize this week. Way to go, Shawn!

~~~
Jack has been very interested in the Snail Bob app. He is getting so good at moving the main character, Bob, through the different traps and pitfalls. He also laughs hysterically when Bob succumbs to the various dangers before him.
I think what makes me smile the most is that Jason loved this game also when he was Jack's age. :)
~~~

Love this quick video of Shawn scoping out the ladies at school...

He's such a flirt. The ladies love him, too!

~~~
In the boys' district, every second grader is given the Gifted and Talented test to see if they will qualify for the GATE program. The test is not language based, instead testing a students ability to predict patterns and their spacial awareness.
Jason came home and declared that he's pretty sure he got a 100% on the test. lol. (We won't know the actual results for a few weeks.)
~~~

The boys had a great week this week. As a reward, they chose to go to grandma's house! How cool is it that grandma's house is so awesome the boys think of it as reward worthy?! Love it!

~~~
And a bonus: Jack's got another loose tooth--this time on the top!
More Child Labor
We're trying to remove a rather large trunk from our flower bed. Jack is very excited to help.
He wants to be in the middle of ALL the action. ALL of it. Lol!
Artist Study
The boys studied Georgia O'Keeffe before spring break. These are their art pieces using pastels and done in O'Keeffe's style.
What did you learn about Georgia O'Keeffe?
J: She actually moved to Mexico and died there.
S: She liked flowers and kisses. (He broke into hysterical laughter. Um, what are they learning at school these days? lol!)
Awesome job, boys!
Jumpin' Around
These two had quite the time in the bouncy house. They yelled, "Boingy Boingy, BOINGY!" the whole time. lol. I'm sure the neighbors LOVED it!
Cute Big Boy Saturday
Late night antics by this guy. So much for going to sleep at bedtime. Oh no. He thought it would be a good idea to pull his tent onto his bed, fill it with all of his babies, and then loudly declare (repeatedly) how scary "this cave" is. lol
We turned on the light when we went in to investigate, and this is what we found...
Friday Five
This is the boys' last weekend of spring break. One isn't looking forward to going back to school on Monday. One can't wait. It's always that way with these two.
This has definitely been more of a stay-cation for us. Our one attempt at a "trip" on Jack's birthday didn't work out very well, and we haven't really had the mojo for doing another attempt yet.
Instead, the boys spent most days outside playing. I think for the most part, they had a nice break even without a big trip, though. :)
~~~

Jack's been back to his early morning wake-ups lately. He has this way of pounding on our bed to announce his presence before he jumps up and positions himself in the crook of my arm. While these early mornings are killing me slowly, I do have to admit to secretly loving the extra snuggles. I just wish the snuggles could come a few hours later! lol

~~~
We've been working on the backyard this week, with the ultimate goal of paving/repaving a few the patio to make more room for the boys to play back there. While we were out there working, Jason asked why we were doing all the work. I explained my thoughts to him.
Oh boy did he take that conversation and run with it. I may need to limit his viewing of HGTV, because he has some definite ideas of what should and should not be done in a backyard. Basically he nixed my ideas and described his own vision of the ultimate backyard. And contrary to his wishes, I am not pulling out the grass to install a "little" skateboard ramp. Just saying.
~~~

Earlier this week, Shawn asked me to replace the batteries in his keyboard. It had been quite some time since he last even looked at that thing, so I was a bit surprised by the request. Since then, Shawn has been in his room playing his keyboard several times a day. What's most impressive to me is that he remembers how to play all of the songs he learned last year. The kid has a crazy, amazing memory!

~~~
Jack is always on the go. Even when he is sitting still, he is moving. Honestly, I'm not sure how he does it, but he does. lol. To supplement all of the expended energy, the boy eats. A lot. Take today, for instance. Jack had breakfast, a mid morning snack, lunch, a second lunch, afternoon snack, a banana while waiting for dinner, dinner, and then a snack before bed. It isn't like he's overweight or even a bit pudgy, either. He's fairly lean! It blows my mind.
It also worries me. If the kid eats this much now, what is it going to be like to feed him when he's a teenager?! Yikes!
Um, Okay?
He rounded up every stuffed baby he could find and created this masterpiece...
Not sure what the reason behind it was, but he was proud of it nonetheless.
Me thinks we have a few stuffed babies in this house!
