Isaac: It's a NASCAR sponsor.

J: I know that. What is it?

Isaac: It's a kind of medicine.

J: What kind of medicine?

Isaac: Um, it increases blood flow.

J: Oh. Okay.

I just love watching him go to work on the iPad. He is do word finds and figuring out missing letters already. Blows me away!

Friday Five

The boys' second week of first grade and my first week of the school year are in the books! Go us! I am so excited that the boys are doing a fantastic job in school this year. I'm so proud of them!

A new morning routine is developing. Shawn likes to come into our room and snuggle under the blankets with us. It is way cute. It definitely makes it hard to get up and start getting ready in the mornings, that's for sure. Not much beats some Shawn snuggles. ;)

It has been a rough week, but I think (hope!) that the worst of the sickness is behind us. All that we're dealing with now is congestion, coughs, and runny noses. That's the easy stuff compared to watching them suffer with nausea. :(

Jack now likes to drag me to different places and then use me to help him get whatever he wants. This evening, he dragged me over to a chair, sat me down, and then proceeded to climb up me so he could reach something on the wall.

These kids keep growing like weeds! Jason is now wearing a size 8 (big kids) shirts! Shawn is wearing a 6/7 (little kids) shirts now. Jack is in 4T shirts. Crazy.

It is also strange having to go to three different sections of the boys department to get clothes now.

Pushing Through

Tonight was Jack's turn to be sick. Poor baby. He was finally able to keep some food down about an hour before he went to bed. I sure hope he is moving past the vomiting part of this crud.

So, at this point, everyone is sick. What fun! lol. We're just pushing through any way we can.

The Day Through a Series of Texts

Today was my first day with students of the school year. As if that wasn't stressful enough, this is what happened today while I was teaching.

It started with a call from the school at approximately 8:45, which was just after Isaac had text to tell me he had dropped the boys off at school...

I'm so glad I answered my phone when the nurse called, because I usually can't while I'm at school. (Thankfully, she called at the end of my prep period.) Isaac didn't respond to my text, so I quickly called him before my next class started. This is his account of what happened when he went to go get Shawn.

Whew, right? Poor Shawn. Poor Isaac! What a mess.

A sick kid + fire alarm + school drama + a little exterminator action (why not at that point?) = a pretty busy day for dad.

Thank goodness for Super Dad to the rescue! No doubt about it, Isaac earned yet another Father of the Year award today.

The good news is that Shawn is feeling better. He managed to eat a few bites at dinner (and hold them down!) and spent the evening tired but acting fairly normal with the exception of his runny nose/congestion. He'll probably be good to go in the morning.

Jason is no longer nauseous, although he is still pretty congested and coughing.

The bad news is that I just heard Jack cough. Looks like round three of the crud will begin soon enough. Boo.

Things Are a Little Clearer

Today, the first cold of the school year was officially declared. In reality, I pretty much knew we were no longer dealing with just allergies last night after hearing Jason moan and groan in his sleep.

Nevertheless, I wasn't ready to admit defeat. So when Jay woke up this morning and said he still didn't feel good, I convinced him he'd be okay once he got to school.

All went well until it didn't. He made it as far as the school parking lot before he threw up all over Isaac's car.

Yet another parenting fail right there.

By the afternoon, he'd had some toast and was on his way toward recovery. I hoped that meant we'd squeak by with minimal damage.

It could happen.

My hopes were dashed when we got to school to pick up Shawn only to find him with a runny nose and congestion. And now I hear him moaning and groaning in his sleep...

Fun times.

Monday Moment on a Sunday

Jason wasn't feeling well this evening (Oh please have this be allergies and not the start of a cold after only THREE days of school!), so he was lying on the couch resting. Every time he'd try to sit up, Jack would run over and push him back down.

"You go to sleep, Jay-son. You go night, night now." he kept telling him.

lol. It was pretty funny and way cute!

Apparently, not sleeping in bed is the new thing.

Friday Five - School and Such

Week number one of first grade is in the books. By all accounts it was a great week! More of this kind of week to come, please!

"Mom! We get THREE recesses! Can you believe that?"

Three recesses is a big deal in this house. It also means a lot more time outside during school than what the boys are used to. That translated to some sunburned cheeks today. Boo.

The boys were all excited to check out the lunch menu for school. We sat down and read through each day for the rest of the month.

"That food doesn't sound very good," one replied.

His brother's "Yeah!" confirmed the sentiment.

Surprise, surprise, not a single thing on the menu was something they'd eat. Sigh.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Jack has loved having all the extra attention this week. While he doesn't care so much for leaving the boys at school, once he's home, he likes it just fine. lol

Shawn's two front teeth are getting pretty loose. I'm hoping with all I've got that they are out by the time the boys take school pictures. That would be too cute!

And I'm also hoping for some good pictures this year while we're on the matter. Let's not have a replay of last year, please boys.

Just like that, they walked into the school and it became official.

From what I've heard, their day went really well. They came home excited and happy, too! Can't beat that, now can you?

Shawn's Date!

Shawn had his "get to know you" doctor's appointment today. Like we did for Jay's appointment yesterday, we decided to make today Shawn's date day!

Shawn did fine at the appointment (47" tall and 47 pounds!). Because I had given the pediatrician all of Shawn's information yesterday, his appointment was very quick and we had a bit of time before lunch.

What does any normal person do when they have an hour of free time? Why go to Target of course!

Shawn LOVED having both of us there just for him. It was super sweet. Interestingly, he never once asked about his brothers. lol.

He got to pick out a toy, too! He was in pure heaven!

Then, we headed out for a little lunch at a restaurant.

We also got the chance to go see the boys' teacher and classroom. We went and got Jason from grandma's and took him with us. We looked around, saw some old friends, and met their teacher. (We're all set for tomorrow!)

We took Jay back to grandma's and dropped daddy off. Shawn and I then went off to my work, where Shawn got to help me work on setting up my classroom.

I put him to work cleaning up some trash...

but it wasn't long before he found my desk and computer.

He looks so grown up!

It was another fantastic day, and we had loads of fun!

We're on a Date, Mommy!

Jason had a get to know you doctor's appointment today. I decided that instead of just going there and being done for the day, we'd make it a fun afternoon of one on one time for us.

"We're going to go on a date, mommy!" How totally sweet is that?

Jay was a rock star at the appointment (50.25" tall and 53 pounds!). Afterward, we headed out for a little lunch at a restaurant.

 

He ordered his own food, perfected the art of keeping your napkin on your lap, and learned some of the nuances of baseball while we watched the Little League World Series. He thoroughly enjoyed himself!

 

Then we headed to the big adventure of the afternoon...the library! He was in awe of all the books. (It was pretty awesome to see him so excited, too!)



 

He knew just what kind of books he wanted to find. He found one of the librarians and asked her to help him find books on Nascar racing.

As she led him to the shelves, she asked him whether he wanted to read stories or facts. The boy answered without even pausing -- he wanted facts, thank you very much!

He hit the mother load of books, clearly finding his version of heaven! He spent quite a long while selecting just the right ones to read. He found a table and got busy losing himself in the world of racing.

By the time we left, Jay had found himself several biographies of his favorite racers (Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, and Matt Kenseth) and had an armful of other books on Nascar wrecks, what happens in the pit, and the history of racing.

He even got himself his first library card!

He can't wait to go back again. It was a fantastic day and we had a lot of fun. :)
