A Few Questions About My Brother - by Jason About Shawn

It's Jason's turn to answer questions about his brother.

~~~
1. My brother is 5 years old. (I'm taking this one out because this is a no brainer for them. lol. I'm adding another question at the end.)
2. My brother is nicest when (he) says "I love you.". (Shawn does say this a lot. :) )
3. My brother loves to eat macaroni and cheese! (I wouldn't say it was his favorite, but Shawn does like it.)
4. My brother always says, "I love you, Jason!" (See? I told you Shawn says this often!)
5. My brother laughs when I tell him knock knock jokes. (It's all the rage around these parts.)
6. My brother is really good at singing songs. (Shawn sings all the time.)
7. I make my brother happy when I shoot raspberries at him. (It did make Shawn smile! Jason did it to prove it to me.)
8. My brother makes me feel loved when (he) hugs me and tells me he loves me. (Melts my heart)
9. If I could give my brother any present it would be a new toy car with eyeballs. (This means a Cars movie car. Jason does not like 'cars with eyes' and gives them all to Shawn. lol)
10. If my brother could, he would like to play with his box of cars 3000.
(This is Shawn's box of cars. Shawn likes to pour them out and tell stories about the cars as he puts them back in the box.)
11. My brother and I like go on road trips in the car. (I think we've created a few travel monsters.)
12. What I love most about my brother is he has a big heart. (I mean really--could he have been any sweeter here?)
13. My brother gets mad when I get too close to the tv and touch his cars and take one! (Oh man, the fights we have over touching the other's cars. This is definitely something that would make Shawn upset.)
Mostly Wordless Wednesday - Cape
One of the best spent dollars in a long time was this cape. Jack loves to wear it. Of course, his way of wearing it may be a little unconventional.
I am beginning to wonder if the cape truly does have super powers. Somehow, he has yet to run into anything! :)
A Few Questions About My Brother - by Shawn About Jason
Okay, we did the questions about mommy and daddy. Now it's time to see how the boys think about each other.
~~~

1. My brother is 5 years old. (I'm taking this one out because this is a no brainer for them. I'm adding another question at the end.)

2. My brother is nicest when (he) when he plays with daddy's phone. (This cracks me up. Apparently Jason needs to be distracted in order to be nice. LOL)

3. My brother loves to eat pizza! (This is one of Jason's favorites.)

4. My brother always says, "The cars are racing!" (Ha! Jason does have a lot of car races.)

5. My brother laughs when I make silly faces. (I was surprised by this answer, but I guess that it's true. Good thinking, Shawn!)

6. My brother is really good at picking up cars. (Hm. I don't see the picking up of cars as much as I see the spreading cars out all over the house in parking lots, but I suppose he does do some cleaning up after himself.)

7. I make my brother happy when I jump. (On the bed? On him? I'm not sure where he was going with this one. lol)

8. My brother makes me feel loved when (he) he gives me a pillow and a blanket and makes me asleep. (He likes it when his brother takes care of him. So sweet!)

9. If I could give my brother any present it would be a video of "I've Been Working on the Railroad." (So you want to give Jason a video of your favorite song...hmmmm.)

10. If my brother could, he would like to go to bed.
(To be fair, I asked these questions right before bed time, so maybe that was on his mind. Of the two, I think it is Shawn who likes to go to bed. Unless this was a plot by Shawn to get rid of Jason so he could have mommy and daddy all to himself. There's always that option.)

11. My brother and I like to play together. (Doesn't this melt your heart? Shawn loves to play with Jason.)

12. What I love most about my brother is his cars. (Such a boy response!)

13. My brother gets mad when -- I don't make him mad! (Oh man, did this upset Shawn. He insisted over and over and over again that he doesn't make Jason mad. I totally hit a nerve!)

Comedian

Uh Jason...

Yes, Dad?

You have a little something on your cheek.

Where Dad?

On this side?

Um...other side.

Oh! Thanks, Dad.
 I was looking for that.

So Grown Up!

I think Jack said something about not wanting to be late for his 7:00 meeting.

....Or maybe he said 7:00 Feeding.

If he works it all just right, he'll be able to get a bath in before his next nap. So much time, so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it.

Cute Big Boy Saturday - Escape

I'm not feeling all that great today. Actually, I've been alternating between sweating buckets and freezing to death.

What made it worse was that I was solo with the boys for much of the afternoon. They wanted to do something. Anything. All I wanted to do was have my head firmly planted on the arm of the couch and never move. I may have been somewhat less than cheery in my response to normal, everyday boy sounds. Ahem. It hasn't been pretty.

At one point, the boys tried to go rogue. They wanted to go outside!!! (They would have on their own, but they couldn't open the door. Yea for the small things.) Here they are banging on the glass door, trying to escape. Jack was even helping the cause by banging, too, but I wasn't quick enough to snap a picture before he left to find something else to do. I suppose they were hoping for some random neighbor to hear their pleas and release them from a day of boredom and a cranky mommy.

We want to go outsiiiiiiddddde!
Free us, please! Anyone!

A New Dish

He was quite proud of himself tonight.

So much so, that he wanted a picture taken to commemorate the moment.

He made a new dish.

Behold "cheese and ketchup fries"

It was very delicious.

At least he said it was.
His face may have told a different story.

A Few Questions About Daddy - Jason

It's Jason's turn to answer a few questions about daddy. I did not help him answer these, so what you see is what he really said. I added my comments afterward.

Jason's answers about mommy are here.

~~~
1. My dad is 199 years old. (Heh, heh, heh. In Jason's terms, this is really old.)
2. My dad is nicest when (he) helps us when we need help with stuff. (It is nice when you get help.)
3. My dad loves to eat spinach! (Another one of those foods we don't often eat. Perhaps he thinks daddy is Popeye or something.)
4. My dad always says, "Jack no!" (Well, it is a phrase that must be said.)
5. My dad laughs when we tell jokes. (It's hard not to laugh when you hear a good joke.)
6. My dad is really good at playing parking lots with me. (What cracks me up is that daddy is only supposed to watch.)
7. I make my dad happy when I blow slurberts at him. (It makes Jason happy, too.)
8. My dad makes me feel loved when (he) hugs me. (Melts my heart)
9. If I could give my dad any present it would be a new camera cuz he loves cameras. (He has been taking a lot of pictures lately.)
10. If my dad had time, he would like to help me with broken parking lots.
(Well, he really only supposed to watch Jason fix the broken parking lots, but he is definitely there for moral support. Or something.)
11. My dad and I like go on vacation at Sea World at Santiago. (It's going to blow his mind when we go back this summer.)
12. What I love most about my dad is that he likes to help me play the game "Extreme Racing." (He loved, loved, loved that game!)
Mosty Wordless Wednesday - Song
Shawn loves to sing. His tastes in music vary from a good old children's song to more modern songs like his favorite from the group Fun. He sings all the time, and when he sings, we are all expected to sing, too. lol
We took this one this weekend. Makes me smile. :)
A Few Questions About Daddy - Shawn
I asked Shawn questions about daddy. Again, I did not help him answer these, so what you see is what he really said. I added my comments afterward:
Shawn's answers about mommy are here.
~~~

1. My dad is 4 years old. (It seems I am always older than their father!)

2. My dad is nicest when (he) is happy and not when I think he's sad. (I can see his point. We are all nicer when we are happy.)

3. My dad loves to eat cheese! (I guess Isaac eats cheese. I don't really think it is high on his list of regulars, though. lol)

4. My dad always says, "Sorry." (lol.)

5. My dad laughs when he's with me. (How sweet is this?)

6. My dad is really good at blocks. (I have to admit that their dad can build some pretty cool block towers.)

7. I make my dad happy when I (am) on the potty. (True. That does make him happy.)

8. My dad makes me feel loved when (he) makes me chocolate cake. (This kid is our foodie.)

9. If I could give my dad any present it would be a movie. (He wouldn't tell me which movie he'd give to daddy, but he was adamant about it being a movie.)

10. If my daddy had time, he would like to pick up the cars. (We do have a lot of toy cars all over the place.)

11. My daddy and I like to watch the Three Little Pigs. (I am assuming he is talking about a YouTube video.)

12. What I love most about my daddy is hugs. (Another heart melting answer. Sigh.)

A Few Questions About Mommy - Jason

I asked Jason the questions about me. Here are his answers and my comments. As an aside, neither boy heard the other's answers. :)

~~~
1. My mom is 12 years old. (Well look at that. I am aging at a rapid rate now!)
2. My mom is prettiest when (she) snuggles with us and plays with us. (Sniff, sniff...if this is any indication, this boy is not going to have trouble with the ladies. He sure knows what to say.)
3. My mom loves to eat spaghetti. (Seriously. I don't eat that much spaghetti!)
4. My mom always says, "Jack stop doing that!" (Another true statement. Ahem.)
5. My mom laughs when I tell knock knock jokes. (He does tell a good joke.)
6. My mom is really good at taking care of me and Jack and Shawn. (See what I mean with knowing what to say with the ladies?)
7. I make my mom happy when I play with Shawn. (On those rare occasions when it happens, I am happy.)
8. My mom makes me feel loved when I hug her. (He won't let me kiss him. He keeps wiping them off. I have to settle for hugs.)
9. If I could give my mom any present it would be a new toilet because you (I) go potty a lot. (Um...yeah. There's nothing I can say to make that sound any better. Sigh.)
10. If my mom had time, she would love to (he couldn't come up with an answer, probably because it will never happen anyway.)
11. My mommy and I like to play. (We sure do.)
12. What I love most about my mom is her face. (Isn't this the sweetest thing?!)
A Few Questions About Mommy - Shawn
I asked Shawn a few questions about me. I did not help him answer these, so what you see is what he really said. I added my comments afterward:
~~~

1. My mom is 5 years old. (Um...he thinks I'm the same age as him. I'm not sure whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.)

2. My mom is prettiest when (she) flaps her wings like a bird. (I don't have any idea what he's talking about. I don't think wing flapping has ever been a regular occurrence.)

3. My mom loves to eat spaghetti! (I am not sure why he thinks this. I rarely have spaghetti, although it is fine when I eat it.)

4. My mom always says, "Happy Birthday to me" (Lol. He wishes.)

5. My mom laughs when I say spaghetti. (I have to admit that I did laugh when he answered number 3.)

6. My mom is really good at parking cars. (I wonder if this refers to toy cars or real cars. Either way, he's right. I am pretty good at it.)

7. I make my mom happy when I (am) listening and stop screaming. (True. That does make me happy.)

8. My mom makes me feel loved when (she) kiss me and hug me. (Melts my heart)

9. If I could give my mom any present it would be a car. (Good choice boy. Remember that. Make it something pretty and fast.)

10. If my mommy had time, she would like to eat. (Something chocolate is preferred.)

11. My mommy and I like to play. (So sweet)

12. What I love most about my mom is presents. (What's not to love about that? lol)

Mostly Wordless Wednesday - Coffee Cup

We had fast food the other night. The boys ordered kids' meals. Boy were they excited to learn the restaurant was out of regular cups.

They had so much fun drinking their "coffee" during dinner. I think that cup totally made their night. :)

Conversations With 5 Year Olds

Shawn (while playing with his cars): I'm gonna park my car right here. There.

Me: That looks pretty good, Shawn.

Jason (interrupting): Mom. You park a car. You also park an airplane. You moor a boat. I bet you knew that, mom. Right?

Me: Uh...yes, Jay. I knew that. (I think!)

And with that he was on his way.

The boy just wants to be free.

All the time.

You have to admit that he does have a cute tushy, even when it
has a modesty box covering part of it. :)

Dinner

The boys never miss an opportunity to show us their differences.

The way Shawn eats his quesadilla, sour cream, and avocado...

Look at his nice table manners.
(excuse the mess on the table. oopsie)

compared to his brother.

Apparently, Jason believes forks are highly overrated.

Thursday Throwback

It's been a long week, and I'm out of ideas, so tonight I wanted to reshare a funny story from April of last year. You can see the original post here.

~~~
Fire Alarms and the Boy in the Car
Alternatively titled: "Another Example of My Parenting Prowess"
The boys' Wednesday school (therapy) session started out pleasantly. Shawn was putting a puzzle together with his teacher inside the classroom, while Jason was outside doing some exercises with his teacher. All in all, I was pleased that things were going well. It was going to be a good day at school. Yea!
Ten minutes in, the fire alarm started blaring. The strobe lights flashed and the intense wail of the alarm itself startled us all.
When it started, I was outside with Jason. He was not happy about the noise, but he was at first more confused as to what it was than anything else. I left Jason with his teacher, Mayra, and went in to grab Shawn.
Shawn, however, was a mess. Unfortunately, he was sitting right below the alarm when it sounded. He immediately freaked and started screaming and crying. His teacher was trying to get him out of his chair and had just lifted him into her arms, but Shawn was having none of that. He was fighting her to let him go when I got there. I grabbed him and my purse and we evacuated outside to be with Jason and his teacher.
Now, in case you didn't know it, the boys have an aversion to loud noises, which we believe is another remnant from their days in the NICU. (All those beeps, alarms, and machine noises are bound to leave their mark on anyone.) The vacuum cleaner can cause hysterics. Shoot, the sound of the electric mixer is sometimes enough to work them up to a frenzy. You can imagine what the sound of a fire alarm did to my boys.
By the time we made it to Jason, he was also a scared, crying mess. We made our way to a picnic bench at the far end of the playground. A few others from the building had made their way outside, too. We stood around and waited.
And waited.
The alarm continued to blast and the strobe lights flashed for ten full minutes.
Did I mention that my boys don't care for loud noises?
Listening to that alarm was brutal for them and me. Poor guys.
Finally, they were able to shut the alarm off. They tried everything to stop the lights but could not get them to turn off. We continued to wait.
At this point, I had decided it was time for us to go home. The boys were upset (and my head was killing me). I didn't think they'd do much at school after this fiasco anyway. The teachers decided they didn't want to risk taking students back into the room with the lights still flashing because of the seizure risks, so it was a done deal.
I carried Shawn out the back gate and made my way around to the car. Mayra carried Jason out behind me. At the car, I put the car keys into the door cup holder while I put Shawn into his seat on the passenger side. I shut the door and turned around to get Jason.
I almost died when I heard the car horn beep. I whipped around to see Shawn, inside the car, holding the keys in his hand while he happily pushed the "lock" button over and over again so he could hear the horn.
Crap. Crap. Crap. Crap!
I tried to coax Shawn into pushing the "open" button on the car keys. He would, but he wasn't pushing it hard/long enough to get it to open the doors. He'd push, I'd run over to the driver's door (takes only one push to open the driver's door, two pushes to open all the doors), and try to open it. Nothing.
My head started to think about how long he could sit in that hot car before he passed out while we waited for Isaac to drive home from work in Camarillo during rush hour.
I contemplated which window would be the cheapest to replace if I had to break one.
I wondered if I could get the teacher to give me her car so I could drive home and look for another key. I had to nix that thought because my house key was on the key chain in Shawn's hand AND the only other key was with Isaac.
I kicked myself a few times for being careless enough to leave the keys in the car in the first place.
Finally, I convinced Shawn to try to push another button. As soon as he pushed it, I heard the click. I ran to the back and exhaled when I saw that he did indeed open the back window of the car.
Hallelujah! Of course he only opened the top window and not the door hatch, but I was taking whatever I could get!
I crawled in through the window (a harder feat than I thought), pulled myself about halfway in, and reached for the keys. I unlocked the doors so Jason's teacher could put him into the car.
I, however, was still half in/half out of the car window. I couldn't get myself back out the window and there wasn't enough room to pull myself all the way into the car.
I was quite the sight, I'm sure, with my outstretched legs sticking out the window. It didn't help that I heard Mayra chuckling to herself after she saw me.
Sigh.
After hours a few seconds, I finally escaped.
I gathered up my bruised ego, finished putting my boys into the car, and headed for home.
Like I said, this is just another example of my parenting prowess. Ahem.
It was HIL-AR-IOUS!
Shawn and daddy rocked out to some music videos.
