Flashback Friday - The Boys Have Nipples

The Boys Have Nipples

Okay, okay. Don't laugh. I know you may think that this is a strange topic for a post. But, I have to tell you that I was seriously wondering if the boys would have nipples. When they were first born, we looked and looked for nipples. They didn't have them. Really. I was a little freaked by it if you want to know the truth.

I started to wonder what their lives would be like nipple-less. Would they be ridiculed in the locker room? Would they have body issues and become male anorexics? Maybe they would try to overcompensate for the lack of nipples with freakishly large steroid-induced muscles? Would they be forced to live a life in the circus because of their unusual condition?

Chandler from "Friends" came to mind. If Chandler was ridiculed for having three nipples, surely the boys would face horrendous taunting for having none.

(A mother has to think of these things you know.)

Imagine my relief when the smallest hint of nipples started showing late last week. And now I am happy to say that today my boys have pencil eraser sized areolas/nipples! They are so cute. (Is "cute" the correct word to use to describe nipples?) Whew. Crisis averted!

***FYI, From what I can find, nipples start to develop in the 7th week of pregnancy. Early preemies are often born with little melanin which is why it looks like they don't have nipples until their skin matures more. :-)

On the eating front, weights are still increasing. Shawn weighs in at 5 pounds and 6 ounces. Now brace yourself. Jason weighs in at......5 pounds and 15.6 ounces! (I say we should just round up to 6 pounds!) I swear that today our little hefty boy had a double chin!!! Too cute.

***********

I also wanted to add that I fixed the video on the "So Patient" post. I apparently hit the wrong button when I was editing the video. It should be 52 seconds long, not the 15 that were posted. ;-)

World Prematurity Day - November 17

Today we are purple.

Purple to honor all of the millions of babies worldwide who were born too soon.

Purple to honor the fight of those babies and their families for survival.

Purple to honor those babies who can fight no more.

Today we are purple to honor those we love who have been touched by prematurity.

Today I was purple to honor our super boys, Shawn and Jason.

I will forever be amazed by the strength and determination our two boys showed in the early days of their lives. They endured more in those months than many people ever experience in their entire lives. It seemed like every complication possible was thrown their way, but together they conquered the NICU.

They captured the hearts of everyone who worked with them. (I think they still do. :) )

Our guys survived and thrive.

We are the lucky ones.

---

Born at 28 weeks and 3 days, our guys were not even 3 pounds and about as long as a Barbie doll.

Shortly after the boys were born. This is Isaac's ring.
It would have easily slid all the way up to their armpits.

A little hand barely able to hold daddy's thumb.

A small round band aid to protect a delicate knee
(their knees were so delicate that the skin would
get raw when they'd lay on their bellies)

Our guys were tiny but mighty.

I didn't even get to see him in the delivery room.

our respiratory therapist who made this happen.

They were preemie size and still swam on him for weeks.

Meeting Jason for the first time. I was given a brief glimpse
of Jason in the operating room, but they held him up for me for literally a second.

They had a rough start, but our super boys are strong, smart, determined, and funny.

We are the lucky ones. I hold that knowledge in my heart. Our boys are here with us.

Please consider visiting the March of Dimes website for more information or even donate to this worthy cause. Their research helped save our boys.

Mostly Wordless Wednesday - So Patient...

Tonight after dinner: Jason was being so patient with his little brother...

Jack was trying as hard as he could to whack Jay with his Sofie. I think we are in for it with this little one!

Kidbits: Our Life in a Series of Face Book Updates... Part 12

In honor of my super boys, Shawn and Jason (born at 28 weeks and 3 days), and the million babies born too soon this year, I'll be wearing purple on November 17th.

Please join me on World Prematurity Day ...

A certain someone is under the misguided belief that he can scream his wants (ending with a hearty NOW!) and get something. Silly boy.

Ain't going to happen.

He's lucky we're under germageddon and that could be contributing to this ...fun... behavior or he'd be getting into some serious trouble right about NOW. Ahem.

November 14 at 1:31pm

---

Third man down. Sigh. So much for a nice, restful long weekend...

November 13 at 4:48pm

---

"Mommy, you are the best doctor in the whooooole world." **melt**

Starting to feel better. :-)

November 12 at 9:29am

---

‎2nd man is down. Jason decided that he too would join the sickness party. Boo. Let's hope his recovery is as speedy as Shawn's. Jack hasn't been eating like usual. I hope he isn't next...I sense that we may all be in for it.

November 11 at 11:24pm

---

The big boys spent the night apart, as my mom kept Jay and Jack while we went to the hospital. We didn't get the J's until this morning. They have been pretty inseparable since.

It is incredibly sweet to hear both the big boys are in Shawn's bed for quiet time. Granted, there isn't much "quiet" happening, but I can't get in the way of them being together. :-)

Shawn is doing much better today. He slept well (with his feet in my back all! night! long!) and is eating today. I don't know what was going on with him yesterday, but it was scary and I'd like to not have a repeat thank you very much.

I, however, am beat and have one major headache. :-/

November 10 at 10:51am

---

Long 6 hour night in ER with a sick Shawn. Just getting home at neatly midnight. It looks like he will be fine, though. Such a relief.

My brain is fried. I am going to be worthless tomorrow. :-/

Here's an interesting tidbit: "The March of Dimes was established by FDR to fight polio. The mission focus [has since] shifted to premature birth and birth defects."

Our family is very fortunate because of that mission focus shift!

Discover the history of the March of Dimes from its founding in 1938 to combat polio to its current efforts to improve the health of all babies...

Prematurity Awareness Month - Fact: "More than 70 percent of premature babies are born between 34 and 36 weeks gestation. About 12 percent of premature babies are born between 32 and 33 weeks gestation, about 10 percent between 28 and 31 weeks, and about 6 percent at less than 28 weeks gestation."

My boys were born at 28 weeks gestation.

Babies born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy are called premature. While many of these babies do well, some go on to have lifelong health problems...

November is Prematurity Awareness Month.

Jack's been awake for a half an hour, but has yet to ask to get up. I peeked in to see what he was doing. He's happily sucking on his toes. Now I wonder how long that will entertain him. Lol

October 30 at 3:26pm

---

We are currently facing birthday let down. Some little people are so sad that the celebrations are over. :-(

The concept of "next year" is totally lost on them, too!

October 30 at 11:08am

---

Jason has decided that all the presents are for him. Lol. Being a twin has its perks!

October 29 at 6:58pm

---

‎2 of Jack's teeth broke through. He's now up to 5. It looks like there are a few more about ready to erupt.

October 27 at 9:34pm

---

"Mommy...I had the most wonderfulest birthday."

"Me too!"

And with that, they both rolled over and went to sleep. :-)

October 27 at 9:30pm

---

Whoa. I now have two 4 year olds in my house. That just boggles my mind! :-)

Happy Birthday Shawn and Jason!

October 27 at 12:22am

---

It looks like the littlest is getting his upper front teeth now (he already has his upper right canine tooth). He is one unhappy guy. Today, he refused to drink his bottle. Now you KNOW he has to be miserable for that to happen. :-(

October 26 at 11:54pm

---

Shawn had his eye appointment today. His prescription has improved by a lot. I don't know if it was the strabismus surgery or his eyes maturing, but yeah for progress. Maybe someday we can ditch his glasses! That has always been a possibility...

Dare to dream!

October 26 at 9:24pm

---

The "why?" stage (in stereo) is exhausting. Seriously.

October 25 at 5:45pm

---

Isaac told one of the boys to give him a tow. (They were playing cars.) The boy handed him his foot. I almost died from the laughter. I sometimes forget how literal this age is!

October 21 at 9:52pm

---

Little guy had some avocado tonight. Let's just say he is a fan. I couldn't get it in his mouth fast enough! Lol

October 19 at 10:51pm

-------------------------------

Hey, this is the 600th post! (That's averaging a post every 2.5 days. Or something. If I was keeping count and all.)

For what it's worth, this is post 178 in a row, which means I've posted every day for 5 months and 25 days. (Again if I was keeping track...)

Ahem. Can we say, "Toot! Toot!" :-)

Monday Memories - Germageddon

If you are the investing type, I think it may be time to buy stock in Kleenex. We are going through them like there is no tomorrow. Surely my family alone will net you some pretty pennies at this rate.

In other words, the germ fest, affectionately dubbed "Germageddon", continues. All three boys have succumbed to the power of these mutant germs. I imagine it is only a matter of time before they strike the rest of us.

Then it will be a complete and total snot-o-rama around these parts.

The only saving grace is that whatever this is seems to be fast moving.

Between all of the nose blowing/wiping/running and the frequent rests, the boys are still getting in a bit of play time.

Shawn's reading one of his books.
(Notice he's got the Target ad there for backup.)

Jason is building yet another car city something or other.

Jack is sitting here trying to eat the knobs of his toy.

What you can't tell, or maybe you can, is that I had to wipe noses after every single shot. Lol. Such is the life around these parts for the next few days.

Caption It Sunday - Food

This picture definitely needs a cute caption.

Any ideas? Write a caption for the picture and leave your suggestions in the comments below. (Don't forget to leave your name, too!)

10 extra credit points and bragging rights to the best one!

**Jack's been very attentive any time I have food. It's hilarious to watch his mouth work and water while I eat. One of these days, he's going to push me to the side and grab the food right from my hands!
