Yesterday, as part of our summer work, the boys did their first experiment. They used lemon juice (from a lemon off of our own tree no less!) to see what effect it had on pennies.
They were quite impressed to see how clean their pennies were after sitting in their lemon juice baths. We talked about the lemon juice being an acid cleaned the copper oxide off of the pennies and made them shiny again.
Tonight, after dinner, Shawn wondered if orange juice would do the same thing to pennies. We loved talking to him and watching him as he reasoned out what he thought would happen.
He told us the supplies he would need to do his experiment. Then we let him at it.
He was pleased to learn that orange juice had the same effect on the pennies. (In our case, we think it worked even better than the lemons.)
Yea for summer! Yea for learning!
