Daddy Moment #22
When it comes to babies, you can fully expect to have moments when your memory will play tricks on you. When you have more than one baby, it can leave you all together. For instance, I recall a few nights when my wife was attending a conference for work and I was flying solo. Baby feedings were regularly occurring in the wee hours of the night. At times, it seemed as if I were operating on auto-pilot and most of the time, in the dark. The routine was the same. Hear baby noises. Rise out of bed. Make a bottle. Feed baby. Burp baby. Change baby. Sanitize hands. Put baby in crib. Then do it all over again.
Well, one night, everything was going according to plan. While finishing with the first baby, I realized that I just used the last diaper. I simply walked to the garage and opened a new giant box of diapers. I brought some diapers back to the baby's room, set them down on the changing table and was ready for the next customer. But wait, they were both sound asleep. My mind struggled with the recollection of the last few minutes of my life. I know that I fed one of you, I thought to myself, but which one? Think man, think, I whispered to myself. Somehow, in my mind, all the nights had blurred together. Hmmmmm....what to do?
After a few moments of frustration, I did what any other exhausted man in my position might do. I tried to recreate what I thought happened in my mind. Oh! I know! I'll check the bottle. Each boy has their own bottle. "Here bottle bottle, where are you?" Where the heck did I put that thing? I searched all the usual areas. I searched in the kitchen, fridge, living room and for those of you smarty pants out there, the garage too, no bottle. "Your mind plays tricks on you. You play tricks back. It's like you're unraveling a giant cable knit sweater that someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting!"
By this time, I began to seriously doubt that I was even awake. In the midst of a blank mind, I attempted to do the only thing left that I could think of at the time. I tried to think like my wife. What would Stacie do? Ahhh yes, of course, I like the way my wife thinks. It was genius in it's simplicity! I could hear her voice now. "Go back to bed. When the unfed baby gets hungry, he will let you know." Genius I say! (added by "the wife": I am a genius! He finally sees it!)
By the way, the unfed baby turned out to be Jason. And as for the bottle, somehow, some way, it ended up in the drawer where we keep the diapers. I found it when I was changing Jason.

Isaac, I think you should start your own blog. You're an awesome writer too!
You could have also done the diaper squeeze. Which every one was all mushy was the one that had not been changed.
