Friday Five
Yeah! Grandma is back! I know some boys who are very excited. :)
~~~
Jack has now decided he is all about the apple, which, if you can believe this, may have surpassed the banana on his top ten food list.
What do you call a boy named Jack who loves apples?
Apple Jack, of course!
~~~
So this next week will bring Teacher Appreciation Day. I asked the boys what they wanted to get for their teacher. Jason said he thought she should get some flowers. I figured out a cute idea to help him give her some "flowers".
Shawn, on the other hand, thinks she should get a pencil. I'm not sure if that's because he could think of nothing else and thought of the idea because he was actually holding a pencil in his hand at the time, or if he truly thinks she should get a pencil. I'm not sure what cute thing I can come up with to go with the pencil idea. We shall see. lol
~~~
I do believe that Jack has had yet another growth spurt. All of his pants are high waters now and his shirts are showing more midriff than I'd like. Looks like we'll need to update his wardrobe sooner rather than later.
~~~
Jason has been obsessed with cars for a while now. Today we had to discuss what happens when a car runs over a spike strip. A simple "the tire gets flat" answer was not enough for him. Instead, I was told I could look up information he wanted on Google. Inquiring minds just had to know how far a car can go after it runs over a spike strip, what happens when only one or two tires are flat, and how driving on flat tires will ruin the side skirt of the car. After I made him clarify what a "side skirt" even was, he was quite put out when I didn't drop everything to find him the answers.
Oh what it must be like to grow up with any information you want at your fingertips!

All Done!
Jack took it upon himself to clean up!
The fact that he the the contents from the emptied drawer before he put in his toys is a mere technicality. ;)

But Why, Grumpy Man?
Reading the book, Green Eggs and Ham, with Shawn is just about the cutest thing ever. It is amazing to see how much he has improved in his reading this year, and this story really does highlight how hard he is working. Plus, even though we've read the story more times than I can count, he is still excited by the next page and has a running dialogue with the characters, Sam and the other character who we have dubbed "the grumpy man", about what they are doing on each page of the story. Shawn is especially interested in "the grumpy man" because he is so angry. Over and over Shawn "asks" him why he just won't try the eggs and ham already. "But why won't you eat the eggs, grumpy man? Why? Why are you so mad at Sam? Why?" lol
Because he loves the book so much, I decided this week we'd use it for his weekly book report. (As an aside, book reports are evil. Just saying.) One of the things they have to do for their reports is to select a sentence completion. Shawn chose "My favorite character is ________ because ____."
Shawn wrote: My favorite character is the grumpy man because he finally tries the green eggs in the end.
How cute is that?!

Conversations With 7 Year Olds
Part of the bed time routine is that the boys listen to children's music as they drift off to sleep. Tonight I got called into their room...
Him (a bit teary): Mom, this is the saddest song.
Me: Why is that?
Him: He eats a peanut, gets sick, has to have an operation, and dies anyway. It's just so sad.
Me: You know it's just a made up song, right?
Him: Yes, but it's just so sad.
Me: Do you want me to fast forward through the song so you don't have to hear it?
Him: I think that would be best.
I did and he was all happy again. He's heard that song hundreds of times by this point, but tonight it was sad. Lol.
