If You Give a Kid a Toy

The boys have had me read If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff, many times this week. So, I decided to do what all mothers do when they have a story cycling around their brains for days on end--I created my own version. Lol.

No? People don't do that? Really? Ahem.

So, here is my feeble attempt at humoring myself my children. :-)

~~~
...based on the book If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff
If You Give a Kid a Toy
If you give a kid a toy, he'll ask for some batteries to make it play.
When you go to get him the batteries, he'll be sad when you don't have enough.
His crying will give you a headache, so you'll have to take him to the store.
He'll want to ride in the cart and hold on to your phone. Then he'll ask for everything he sees, especially anything sugary. He'll start throwing things into the basket, but the pile will get too tall and fall out onto the floor.
He'll remember the phone and decide he needs to ask Siri for help. He'll tell her "help me clean," but she'll misunderstand what he says. Instead, she'll suggest a search for "bean."
Hearing that, he'll decide he needs to go to a farm. Where he'll pick some berries. And play in the dirt. He might even pick a tomato to give to his brother. After the farm, he'll want to go clean off in the pool. When you get there, he'll jump in. He'll swim far out to the middle of the water. Soon, he'll want you to rescue him.
He'll notice the slide, which will remind him of the park. He'll ask you to take him there. First he'll climb the rock wall. Then he'll swing on the swings. He might even try to ride the dinosaur.
When his tummy rumbles, he'll ask you to leave. On the way home, you'll pass by the store. You'll help him pick up the pile of items on the floor. He'll race you to the car.
At home, he'll try to help you unload. There's a good chance he might drop a bag on the ground. Seeing the bag will remind him of the batteries. He'll probably ask you for some.
And chances are,
if you give him some batteries,
he'll need a toy to put them in.
My Children Are Out to Get Me. Again. Still?
We are an accident prone bunch. With all of these boys around here, it almost can't be helped. It seems someone is ALWAYS getting hurt, tripping over something/someone, walking into a wall, getting a bruise...you name it, someone is doing it.
Fine. I'll confess. Usually that someone is me.
Much of the time, it is not really all that big of a problem. The injured party sigh I just shake off that moment's pain and move on (to the next one). I've even gotten pretty good at anticipating their moves before they happen, which has saved me from plenty of injuries for sure. Still, there are times when I don't quite act fast enough or they catch me off guard.
There was the time that I got a head butt in the chin that ruptured my eardrum.
There was that other time when a toy was thrown and I SWEAR it broke my foot.  There wasn't time to go to the doctor, so I can't really say if it was broken for certain, but I could hardly walk on it for what seemed like days. weeks. months!
I've had pulled/strained muscles from lifting and playing.
Nothing more than the usual types of parenting aches and pains, right? Just agree so I don't feel bad. Ahem.
It was bad enough at one point that I used to joke that my kids were out to get me.
There is only so much bobbing and weaving a person can do before she is ultimately caught. This weekend was my time. I fell prey to yet another injury--a chin to the eye.
I am now sporting a nice black eye. Well, at this point four days into the bruising, it isn't so much black as blue. And yellow. And a sort of greenish color. (I bruise in technicolor. I'm lucky like that.)
It's been fun at work this week. The kids aren't quite sure what to think of my bruise, and they are not sure enough of me yet to ask. I've found it's pretty funny to watch them try to skirt around the topic to see if I'll volunteer any information. I haven't yet. Lol.
I almost don't want to explain it and let them think what they will. Maybe it will up my street cred some? ;-)
I don't know, but I do know telling them I got beat up by a 4 year old is not going to do it!
Mostly Wordless Wednesday - Hugs
Shawn loves to count everything.  Until Jack learns how to count, Shawn may use this skill to his advantage.
One Hug for Jack
And One Hug for Shawn
Two Hugs for Jack
And One.....
Two Hugs for Shawn!
Perfect Moment Mondays - Explosions!
Today we did another science experiment! A little baking soda, some food coloring, and some vinegar = fun, fun, fun!
What's going to happen, mommy?
Oh, wow! It's a geyser! (Yes, he used that word!)
It stopped bubbling. Let's do it again!
My volcano is green, mommy! Cool!
Shawn thought the bubbles were awesome.
So awesome, that he wasn't pleased when it was Jason's turn again.
I think we need more color in this one, mom.
Here it goes!
Ta da! There is the color!
It's my turn now, mommy!
Shawn got his second turn, but I had to put the camera down to supervise him a little more closely. Let's just say that he wanted to pour his volcano on the table...the floor...just about everywhere but in the pan. Ahem.
Afterward, we did the talk about what happened. (I even got all technical and brought in the big terms like "base" and "acid." lol) They were quite impressed and would have done the experiment many more times had our supplies held out longer. I had to promise to go to the store and get more baking soda asap.
Jason even drew a picture!
See all the lava coming down the side.
Sunday Six
Six things I want to remember from this week:
  1. I cut the big boys' hair this weekend. Jason did really well, and barely shed a tear. Shawn struggled with the anticipation of the cut (while Jason was getting his done), but while I was actually cutting his hair, he was much better than he has been. Maybe this means that the days of teary/hysterical hair cuts are in the past!
    Jack did not get his hair cut. I just can't bring myself to cut all of those curls. I love his curls! See?
  2. Jack has added "night, night" to his word list. He says it in the sweetest high pitched voice. Makes me melt.
  3. We do a "detour" on the way home from work everyday. I turn a little early and wind through an area neighborhood which happens to have a kiddie park. After one of our trips, Jason insisted that we come home and write a check on the calendar so we could go to that park. He counted down the number of sleeps until the big day and talked constantly about that check mark. He nearly exploded with excitement when the day finally came. Thank goodness the park was able to live up to his expectations.
  4. While at the park, two ladies sat down and started playing a hand held drum. (I don't know why, but whatever.) I asked Shawn if he wanted to go somewhere else to get away from the noise. "No mommy. I think I'm digging it," he said and then started swaying to the beat. The boy loves music, even bad music. It was too funny.
  5. For the longest time, when I go to pick up the boys I have asked whether they want to spend the night at grandma's that night. The answer was always an immediate 'no' until just recently. Jason started saying 'ok' to the question, but just before we get ready to leave him, he says that he has to cancel because of some random reason. This week's excuses: 1) we have school tomorrow, 2) he'd miss his show, 3) Shawn would be lonely, 4) I don't have any clothes, and 5) grandma needs her sleep. Got to love that he's sacrificing for others, right? lol
  6. Shawn is in this phase of telling us (usually me, Isaac, and my mom) what to ask him so he can answer. He did it to Jason this week, though.
    S: "Jason, ask me if I want to play cars with you."
    J: (all excited at the prospect of playing cars) "Shawn, do you want to play cars with me?"
    S: (after thinking for a moment) "Um...nope."
  7. Sometimes you can't win with this kid!
Cute Baby Saturday
One of Jack's favorite activities is to climb all over (and tear up) his brothers' beds. Behold Jack in action...
Ahhhh...
I LOVE this bed!
It has a great pillow and blanket!
Perfect for resting on during a quick break.
It's so much fun rolling around on it!
If I hide, they won't tell me to get down...
Boo!
Ok. I'll get down now. But I'll be baaaaaccckkk!
I don't even try to make their beds anymore. It never fails that he will destroy any semblance of neat within two seconds flat. lol.
